# How does a brute-force attack work?

**The attacker uses an automated computer program to generate and try different combinations of passwords or keys, often starting with the simplest combinations and progressing to more complex ones.** These attacks can exploit vulnerabilities in systems that have no login limits or that use weak passwords.
