# Managed or unmanaged server: what's the difference and which one should you choose?

||| Are you unsure whether to choose a managed or unmanaged server? The main difference comes down to a simple question: who handles the server's technical administration?

## What is an unmanaged server?

An **unmanaged** server gives you access to the infrastructure, but **you are responsible for its technical management**.
This means you must manage, yourself or with your IT team:
* server installation and configuration
* system updates
* security
* monitoring
* backups
* incident response
This option is mainly suited if you already have technical skills in-house.

## What is a managed server?

A **managed** server includes more in-depth technical support.
The goal is to let you focus on your business, while the technical team supports you with the server's administration.
This can notably cover:
* initial configuration
* server monitoring
* maintenance operations
* assistance in case of issues
* security best practices

## Which option should you choose?
If you have a technical team capable of administering a server, an **unmanaged** package may be enough.
On the other hand, if you don't have a systems administrator, or if you'd rather avoid managing the technical side, it's better to choose a **managed** package.

## In summary:

| Need | Recommended package |
| ---- |
| **You manage the technical side yourself** | **Unmanaged** |
| **You have an in-house IT team** | **Unmanaged** |
| **You want to be supported** | **Managed** |
| **You don't have server skills** | **Managed** |
| **You want to focus on your business** | **Managed** |
