How to easily install an application on your server?

Installing an application on your server may seem complex, especially if this is your first experience with hosting. Fortunately, our hosting plans include Softaculous which greatly simplifies this process. This auto-installation tool allows you to install an application without having to use FTP or MySQL. You can also test the available software before installing them by going directly to the Softaculous website.

Log in to your cPanel
In the "Software" section, click on "Softaculous App Installer"
Search for software in the left column, either via the search engine or via the proposed categories
Click the "Install Now" button on the description page
If needed, modify the location where you wish to install your application, confirm the installation options and click the "Install" button at the bottom of the page

How to retrieve the visitor's country with MaxMind?

What is MaxMind?

MaxMind is a company specializing in IP address geolocation ("GeoIP"). Using its databases, it is possible to reliably identify the country of origin of an Internet visitor based on their public IP address.

At Hodi, you can use this technology to personalize the user experience (for example, adapting the language, currency, or offers based on the visitor's country), or for compliance purposes (for example, restricting access to content by country).

How does it work on Hodi servers?

Our servers have the mod_maxminddb module integrated into Apache. This module reads the MaxMind database and automatically adds variables available in the web server environment.

The most important one for country identification is: MMDB_COUNTRY_CODE. This variable contains the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country code of the visitor (2 uppercase letters).

Here are some usage examples:

In PHP, you can use the variable $_SERVER['MMDB_COUNTRY_CODE']
In Node.JS, you can use the function req.get('MMDB_COUNTRY_CODE')
In a .htaccess, you can use this code to allow only France and Reunion Island for example: RewriteCond %{ENV:MMDB_COUNTRY_CODE} !^(FR|RE)$ RewriteRule .* - [F,L]

Fortunately, our hosting plans include WordPress Toolkit which greatly simplifies this process. This auto-installation tool allows you to quickly launch your WordPress site in just a few steps.

Log in to your cPanel
On the left, click on "WordPress Management"
Then click the "Install WordPress" button:
Leave the installation path empty, or enter "wordpress" if you wish to install WordPress in a subfolder called "wordpress" for example
Confirm the installation options
Make sure to note the generated password or change it.
Click the "Install" button at the bottom of the page
Once your WordPress site is installed, you can start building your website, for example by following the video tutorial by Enzo (Easy Wordpress).

How to find large files on my server?

Log in to your cPanel
In the "Files" section, choose "Disk Usage"
Wait a moment until "Loading" disappears — the duration depends on the number of files on your server
Scroll down to "Sort directories by" and click on "Disk Usage"
You will then see your directories, sorted by size, and you can click the chevron on the left for details about subdirectories (the "mail" directory contains your emails):
By clicking on a directory name, it opens in the File Manager which allows you to delete files and folders by clicking "Delete".
Remember to check "Skip Trash and permanently delete the files" otherwise the files will be in your trash and will still consume space: We recommend hosting videos on third-party services such as YouTube or Vimeo, for example.

If you accidentally delete a file, you can restore it using our backups.

How to configure your FTP client to upload your site?

To upload your site from your computer to our servers, you will need to use an FTP client, such as FileZilla.

What username and password to use?

By default, your hosting has an FTP account whose username and password are the same as your cPanel credentials found in your welcome email. These are not the username and password for your client area. If you have lost your cPanel username or password, click here to learn how to recover them.

You can also create additional FTP accounts in the "FTP Accounts" section of your cPanel. Be careful to change the path in the "Directory" field so that it matches the folder for your website. Your main domain name is located in the public_html folder. If you are a participant in 24h by WebCup, you do not have this option and must use your cPanel username and password.

How to configure FileZilla?
