How to transfer a domain name and how long does it take?

A domain name is a bit like a phone number — you can change providers without losing it. This process involves several steps and Hodi is here to support you throughout the entire procedure.

Warning: if your domain name was registered less than 60 days ago, you will not be able to transfer it.

You can initiate the transfer at any time without waiting for the current expiry date, because the transfer adds one year of validity to your domain*: for example, if your current expiry date is 01/07/2030, the new expiry date after transfer will be 01/07/2031.

* Except for certain extensions

1. Obtain the domain auth code

For a mobile phone, you need a porting code, but for a domain name this code is called Auth code, EPP Code, or Auth info, and you need to verify that your domain name is not locked. The procedure to obtain this code varies depending on the registrar. Below you will find the procedure for different registrars:

This code secures the transfer and ensures that only Hodi can retrieve your domain name.

2. Place the order

The procedure differs depending on whether you also want to order hosting along with your domain name.

Domain name transfer with hosting order

Once you have the code, you can enter it during your web hosting order by clicking on "Transfer a domain name" in the "Domain name configuration" section:

Domain name transfer only

Once you have the code, you can go directly to the Transfer a domain page to transfer your domain. Don't forget to add your domain to your cPanel account.

3. After the order

Once the transfer is initiated, your current registrar may send you a validation email to verify that you are the one who made this request. We encourage you to read it carefully and confirm if necessary. We work with NETIM so do not worry if your current registrar mentions NETIM during the transfer process.

The domain name transfer generally takes between one to two weeks.

If there is an issue (for example, an incorrect auth code), you will automatically receive an email notifying you of the problem, and our customer support can restart the transfer at your request, free of charge.

During the domain name transfer, we recommend taking this time to copy your specific DNS records. You will find more information in the article How to edit your DNS zone?.

Once the domain name has been transferred, we will send you an email to confirm the successful completion of the transfer, and you may receive a regulatory email to validate your email address.
