What is an SSL certificate?

An SSL certificate is a small data file that binds a cryptographic key to the details of an organization or individual.

It is installed on a web server to secure communications between the server and users' web browsers. This creates a secure connection, preventing third parties from intercepting or altering sensitive data such as personal information or payment data.
