How do I transfer a domain name, and how long does it take?
A domain name is a bit like a phone number: you can switch providers without losing it. This process happens in several steps, and Hodi is here to support you throughout.
Warning: if your domain name was registered less than 60 days ago, you won't be able to transfer it.
You can start the transfer at any time without waiting for the current expiry date, because the transfer adds one year of validity to your domain*: for example, if your current expiry date is 01/07/2030, the new expiry date after the transfer will be 01/07/2031.
- Except for certain extensions
1. Get the domain's auth code
On a mobile phone, you need a RIO code, but for a domain name this code is called an Auth code, Transfer Secret, or Auth info, and you need to check that your domain name isn't locked. The procedure for obtaining this code varies by registrar. Below is the procedure for various registrars:
- Canal+ Business Outremer: contact technical support
- Gandi
- GoDaddy
- IDOM: contact technical support
- Infomaniak
- IONOS
- Nordnet (Orange)
- OVH
- SFR Business Réunion: contact technical support
This code helps secure the transfer and makes sure only Hodi can retrieve your domain name.
2. Checkout
The process differs depending on whether you want to order hosting along with your domain name or not.
Domain transfer with a hosting order
Once you have the code, you can enter it when ordering web hosting by clicking "Transfer in a Domain" in the "Domain Configuration" section:
Domain transfer only
Once you have the code, you can go directly to the Transfer a domain page to transfer your domain. Don't forget to add your domain to your cPanel account.
3. After placing the order
Once the transfer has started, your current registrar may send you a confirmation email to verify that you are indeed the one who requested it. Please read it carefully and confirm if needed. We work with NETIM, so don't worry if your current registrar mentions NETIM during the transfer process.
A domain name transfer generally takes between one and two weeks.
If a problem occurs (for example, an incorrect auth code), you'll automatically receive an email notifying you of the issue, and our customer support team can restart the transfer at your request, free of charge.
While the domain transfer is in progress, we recommend using this time to copy over your specific DNS records. You'll find more information in the article How do I edit my DNS zone?.
Once the domain name has been transferred, we'll send you an email confirming that the transfer was completed successfully, and you may also receive a regulatory email asking you to verify your email address.
